An nslookup of the machine name will return the IP address. An nslookup of the Ip address will return the machine name. |

Which steps must be taken on a computer (Electronic Process): |
- Login to Darth (Primary DNS Server) - Assume root security "su -" - Change directory to the location of the "named" file cd /var/named - Edit the database file you wish to modify vi db.sbccd.cc.ca.us - Add the appropriate A, MX or CNAME record - Modify the Serial field on the third line of the file. The Serial field is made from the current year, month, day and a revision number for that day. yyyymmdd## - Save the file :wq - Edit any additional database files necessary - Restart the DNS services with the new settings /etc/rc.d/init.d/named restart Logoff the machine |

Most Linux/Unix books have examples on editing the named databases: named.ca, named.rev, named.local. These are done in the same fashion. |

When adding a machine to a DNS name database ie db.sbccd.org, make sure to update the appropriate database for the IP range ie db.207.233.39 for reverse lookup. |
