January: Helped formerly incarcerated adults find job opportunities
Working together with community partners, we hosted a job and resource fair to give the reentry population a second chance at entering the workforce and living better lives.
February: Welcomed Crafton Hills College’s 9th president in its 47-year history
Regional educational leaders including Cal State San Bernardino President Tomás D. Morales, UC Riverside Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox, and Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District Superintendent Cali Binks, gave special remarks at the investiture of Dr. Kevin Horan, ninth president of Crafton Hills College. Read more.
March: Launched 2 years of free college for local hard-working students
SBCCD’s Free College Promise is the first self-funded two-year free college promise initiative in the Inland Empire. More than 100 local high school students joined us for the big kick-off celebration.
April: Supported local entrepreneurs with mentorship and workshops
Through the Inland Futures Foundation of the San Bernardino Community College District, we hosted monthly workshops to educate, engage and inspire students and community members to start or grow their own business.
May: Awarded 3,000 degrees and certificates to the Class of 2019 at Crafton Hills and Valley College
Commencement is a rewarding moment for graduates and families alike, marking the beginning of a new chapter. For some, it means new career opportunities, and for others, it means transferring to a four-year university. But for all, it means having the knowledge and training to achieve their highest potential.

June: Partnered with businesses to train the next generation of home builders
27 business members of the Building Industry Association Baldy View Chamber pledged to give priority hiring consideration to graduates of SBCCD’s Entry-Level Residential Construction Trades Training Program. Watch video.
July: Advocated for students with Governor’s Office of Business & Economic Development
Higher education and career training play an important role in the growth of the Inland Empire. That is why we hosted a roundtable meeting with the Governor’s Office of Business & Economic Development, to advocate for increased state investment in the success of our students.
August: 1st CA college district to complete Zero Net Energy pilot with Southern California Edison
As part of the Proposition 39 Zero Net Energy Schools Pilot Program, SBCCD, with the help of Southern California Edison, recently applied measures to reduce its carbon footprint. We are the first community college district to participate in the pilot program. Read story.
September: Won $3 million federal grant to expand prison-to-jobs training
With the support of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, SBCCD will rehab a pair of vacant buildings in San Bernardino to serve as centers of workforce training for formerly incarcerated adults. Read more.
October: Made new investment in the community and The Free College Promise
SBCCD expanded its reach and investment in the community with a move to a new district building on Hospitality Lane. Already, the first floor is leased by Molina Healthcare, and the third floor is leased by the law firm, Gresham Savage. The rental revenue will go to SBCCD to benefit students who are part of The Free College Promise. Read more.
November: Announced $70 million renovation of Valley College’s job training hub
Construction starts in summer 2021 on a 99,500 square foot building outfitted for modern workforce training at San Bernardino Valley College. The new building will be accessible, sustainable, and filled with the tools needed to train students in water management, automotive repair, and machining, among other fields. Read more.
December: SBCCD’s credit rating went up, signaling the financial strength of our educational mission
Just like an individual, SBCCD wants a good credit rating in order to pay the smallest amount of interest on what we borrow. This is a very good sign of financial health not only for our district but for our surrounding community. Read more.
