Ergonomics

The SBCCD ergonomics program strives to create a safer and more comfortable working and learning environment by identifying and addressing potential ergonomic hazards. By implementing ergonomic solutions and providing education on proper techniques, the program aims to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and improve overall well-being.

Ergonomics is the science of designing equipment and workplaces to enhance productivity by minimizing discomfort and fatigue. This field, also known as biotechnology, human engineering, and human factors engineering, plays a crucial role in improving workplace efficiency and safety.

What ergonomics entails:

  • Customized Work Environments: Adapting jobs, tools, and workspaces to fit individual employees.
  • Injury and Discomfort Prevention: Aiming to minimize the risk of discomfort and injury in all work-related activities.
  • Essential Training and Education: Providing employees with the knowledge and skills needed to benefit from ergonomic practices.
  • Broad Applicability: Applying ergonomic principles to all types of work, whether in professional or remote settings.

At SBCCD, we emphasize the importance of ergonomics to ensure a healthy, productive, and safe environment for everyone.

Prior to requesting an ergonomic assessment, employees are required to complete the Ergonomic Workstation Self-Assessment and the Keenan SafeColleges Office Ergonomics training.

The ergonomic self-assessment is an evaluation conducted by employees to identify and address potential ergonomic risks in their workplace or daily activities. This assessment involves reviewing one’s workstation setup, posture, and equipment usage to ensure they align with ergonomic principles designed to promote comfort, efficiency, and overall well-being.

By conducting a self-assessment, employees can proactively identify areas of discomfort or strain, make necessary adjustments, and implement ergonomic practices to prevent musculoskeletal disorders, reduce the risk of injury, and enhance productivity and health. This process empowers employees to take control of their work environment, fostering a safer and more ergonomic workspace.
