Hope & Jobs: The Caltrans Project

Second Chances: Job Fair at SBCCD

“[The program] made me feel like that I wasn’t like this loser felon, and they talk to you like you’re just one of them. Like you’re one of their coworkers, or like you’re their friend, or family, and I never really experienced that until I met them.” - Justin Miranda, Caltrans Work Crew participant

“I’ve come too far to give up now” - Silvano Villela, industrial maintenance mechanics participant

“Started taking training with you guys as a forklift driver earning $12 an hour and then took your Industrial Maintenance Mechanics trainings and now earn $15 an hour….not bad.” – Justin Becker, forklift and industrial maintenance mechanics participant

Caltrans Work Crew Program

Caltrans Work Crew Program

The Caltrans Work Crew Program helps individuals recently released from prison with transitional paid-work cleaning roads and highways. The program provides hands-on job training and social services to promote successful reintegration into the community and positive work habits.

Since 2013, our program has produced a 65% job placement rate, and only 2.5% of our participants return to custody.

We work in partnership with the California Department of Corrections, the California State Reentry Initiative, the Urban Conservation Corps, and various community-based organizations.

How do I enroll?

  • First, ask your parole agent to refer you to the California State Reentry Initiative (CSRI).
  • Then, ask your CSRI Case Worker to sign you up for the Caltrans Work Crew Program.
  • Complete 30 days of the CSRI program.
  • Pass a drug test.
  • Must be willing to work.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
