Crime Prevention

One way to prevent crime is to know your surroundings and prepare for what may happen. The San Bernardino Community College District Police provide brochures, pamphlets, videos, and literature on topics of personal safety, campus safety, sexual assault, active shooter, and other criminal behavior. Presentations are also available upon request. Please email Campus Police Training with a date, time, and topic.

To increase crime awareness and campus safety, incidents of criminal activity are published in: the Annual Security Report; Daily Crime Log; and weekly Just the Facts, all found on the District Police website. Take a moment to update your contact information to receive crime alerts that occur on campus, or notifications regarding campus closures. Log into WebAdvisor and follow the directions for Blackboard Connect 5.

Additional safety is addressed on a daily basis by working closely with campus facilities and maintenance. If you observe something unsafe, please contact SBCCD Police.

Active Shooter Safety:

If you are near an exit, get to a safe location and phone 9-1-1.
If you are in a classroom or office, lock or barricade the door, turn off lights, silence cell phones.

Assault/Sexual Assult Safety:

Let someone know where you are going, who you'll be with, and when you'll be home.
Meet in a public place.
Don't drink anything you did not get yourself, or see made.
If you set your drink down and lose sight of it, do not drink from it.
Keep cash with you in case you need to get a taxi home.
Trust your gut feeling.
Is your dating partner jealous or possessive?
Does your dating partner check with you often to see where you are, or who you're with?

You should report any incident of sexual assault to your local police department, or to the SBCCD Police. Many survivors of sexual assault wish to remain anonymous. You may report any sexual assault to Student Health Services (SBVC) or the Health and Wellness Center (CHC) for confidential counseling. You may also contact San Bernardino Sexual Assault Services for counseling and crisis intervention, at no cost.

Robbery Safety:

You may be able to prevent a robbery by:

Being aware of your surroundings.
Have an open line of sight with nothing to block your view. If you see something suspicious, contact police.
Greet people when walking on the street and make eye contact. This shows you are confident, and lets the other person know you are of aware of their presence and may recognize them.
Stay in well-lit areas whenever possible.

During a robbery:

Remain calm.
Be cooperative and you are less likely to get hurt.
Observe the robber closely so an accurate description may be given to police.

After a robbery:

Leave the crime scene in tact for the police investigation.
Ask any witnesses to stay and give a statement to the police.
Write a description of he robber, what direction they fled, and any other pertinent info.

Identity Theft Protection:

Regularly check your credit report and bank statements.
Shred documents with personal, medical, and financial information.
Don't respond to phishing (emails/texts that ask for personal information).
Use anti-virus or anti-spyware software on your computer. Click for more tips on identity theft.

Property Safety:

Report suspicious activity in parking areas.
Keep windows rolled up and lock your vehicle, bike, or moped.
Do not leave your vehicle running while unattended.
Park in well-lit, heavily traveled areas.
Do not leave valuables out in the open. Secure in the trunk or take them with you.
Keep a record of vehicle identification numbers, and serial numbers of electronics.
Consider anti-theft devices such as a club, fuel "kill" switches, or alarm systems.
Do not let belongings out of your sight even for a moment.

Personal Safety:

Walk with confidence.
Walk in well lit areas, and with a companion if possible.
Trust your gut (Campus Police provide escorts to your vehicle or classroom).
Scan your surroundings (bushes, around vehicles, dark corners).
Lock your car doors and roll up all windows.
Park in a well lit area if possible.
Remember you have several weapons at your disposal; e.g. keys, books, pens, hands and feet.

Disabled Persons Safety:

If possible be with a friend, or stay with a group.
Stick to well-lit and well-traveled streets.
Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
Keep belongings close to you if possible.
Always carry medical information with you.
If someone bothers you, make noise, yell, etc.
Role play how to handle threatening situations.
